Pune's double-decker flyover near SPPU puts Metro Line 3 above vehicular traffic, restoring two-way flow on Ganeshkhind Road and easing commutes across Aundh, Baner, Shivajinagar.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the integrated double-decker flyover near Savitribai Phule Pune University via video conferencing a few months ago, calling it a landmark step in freeing the rapidly growing city from chronic traffic congestion.

The flyover is no ordinary bridge — its upper deck carries Pune Metro Line 3, while the lower level serves vehicular traffic, making it one of the few integrated metro-road structures in India and a model for urban infrastructure planning.

For years, commuters from Aundh, Baner, and Pashan dreaded the University Circle bottleneck. The new flyover now gives them a dedicated route toward Shivajinagar, slashing travel times and ending the detours through congested inner lanes. (X/@mohol_murlidhar)

After flyover's inauguration, two-way traffic was restored on three key arteries — Ganeshkhind Road, Senapati Bapat Road, and University Road — with additional traffic police deployed to help motorists ease into the new system.

Separate ramps for traffic from Aundh and Baner toward Shivajinagar, a dedicated flyover from Shivajinagar to Baner and Pashan, and underpasses have been built into the design, ensuring smoother, multi-directional flow across West Pune.

Once Metro Line 3 begins service on the upper deck, residents will have a direct rail link running through the University corridor — reducing dependence on private vehicles and offering a greener daily commute across the city's western spine.

The flyover effect has already rippled into the real estate market. Shivajinagar, with its new Metro station access, and Baner, with faster connectivity to University Circle, are seeing renewed demand from IT professionals and families alike.

With Aundh and Pashan shedding their peak-hour bottleneck reputation, and Hinjewadi now more accessible via improved road links, planners see the SPPU flyover as a blueprint for how Pune — India's rising GCC capital — will grow upward and outward.
