A 22-year-old techie in Pune, who claimed that she was raped by a man posing as a courier delivery agent in her residence, has been booked for allegedly lodging a false rape complaint after a police probe found that her allegations were fabricated.
A non-cognisable case was registered against the woman on Monday under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 212, 217 (dealing with furnishing false information to a public servant) and 228 (fabricating false evidence), a senior police official told news agency PTI.
“We have registered a non-cognisable offence against the woman for giving false information and evidence during the probe and trying to mislead the police," the official said.
The woman had approached the police on July 3, alleging that a “delivery agent" had entered her flat the previous evening and sprayed some chemical, rendering her unconscious, before raping her. She had also claimed the man clicked a selfie using her phone and typed a message threatening to circulate her photos if she disclosed the “incident".

However, in a shocking turn of events, police found that the accused, a highly qualified professional, was friends with the woman and visited the flat with her consent. Even the selfie on her phone was clicked with her consent and was edited by her.
Police ruled out forced entry and the use of spray, saying the woman’s allegations were false and misleading. Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar said the evidence, including phone chats, the sequence of events, mobile communication, and the conduct of both the woman, showed that this was not a case of rape and there was an attempt to mislead the police.
Additionally, the woman told police during interrogation that she had filed the complaint “out of anger" as he had forced himself upon her that evening when she was “not ready for sexual intercourse". They had reportedly met at her residence in the past as well, when her parents were away.
The woman had also told investigators that her unstable mental condition prompted her to make the false claim of rape. Pune cops said the case underscored the importance of verifying facts before registering serious cases, which harm the accused and undermine genuine cases where survivors eek justice.
