In a new shocking revelation in the Pune rape case, the police on Saturday said that the complainant woman, a 22-year-old data scientist, kept changing her statements during questioning, after which she was produced before the court.

Her statement was recorded before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) in the city yesterday, relating to her complaint that she was allegedly raped by an unknown courier delivery agent at her residence in a posh society in Kondhwa on Wednesday evening.

“We produced the woman before the CJM, Ms T M Ahmed, and the process of recording her statement under provisions of Section 183 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) was completed," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone V) Rajkumar Shinde told the Times of India.

This comes after it came to light during the investigation that the accused and the woman were friends and she allegedly told the police during the probe that she had filed the complaint “out of anger" as he had forced himself upon her that evening when she was “not ready for sexual intercourse". They had reportedly met at her residence in the past as well when her parents were away.

Shinde said that there were numerous discrepancies between the FIR the woman filed on Thursday and her subsequent statements.

“She continuously changed her statements during questioning," the officer told the newspaper.

A senior police officer privy to the investigation said that the cops questioned her on material points, to which she made multiple oral and written statements. “But they were found contradictory and misleading during verification. Her statements are not consistent with the FIR. A call to take action against her would be taken based on the outcome of the investigation. She would be referred to a counselling session," the official told TOI.

The woman had earlier alleged that the man came to her doorstep to deliver a courier and spray some chemical on her face to make her unconscious and then allegedly raped her. She had also claimed that he had taken a selfie from her phone and left a message: “I’ll be back". The police had registered a case based on her complaints on Thursday.

However, after the investigation revealed that the accused was her friend and there was no forced entry into her residence, the police released the man on Saturday on conditions after serving him a notice, The Indian Express reported.

There was “no forced entry into the woman’s flat, no chemical was sprayed to render her unconscious and the selfie on her cellphone was taken with her consent before she cropped the image," City police commissioner Amitesh Kumar said on Friday.

The police had detained the accused, 24, a highly qualified professional in Baner, based on the evidence such as cellular location that proved that he was around the residence at the time of the alleged incident. He was released with instructions that he would join the investigation as and when required.
