Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s visit to the historic Darbar Sahib Gurdwara in Sri Muktsar Sahib on Sunday sparked a political controversy after two policemen were reportedly assigned to look after the AAP leader’s shoes, drawing sharp criticism from the opposition BJP in the state, which called him out for the unusual arrangement.
According to an order issued by the Muktsar police, Head Constable Roop Singh and Constable Sarbat Singh were deputed “on duty on the shoes of CM of Punjab at Gate No. 7 in plain clothes," The Indian Express reported.
BJP spokesperson Pritpal Singh Baliawal took to X and slammed Mann over the incident.
“Duty boots on the ground, police boots on the ground! The boots worth millions are getting polished, no one should stay quiet! During Chief Minister Sahib’s visit to Sri Muktsar Sahib, two police officers will take care of Mann Sahib’s boots. The boots of the common people’s youth seem as expensive as Jazzy B’s songs!" Baliawal wrote.

Union Minister of State for Railways and Food Processing Industries Ravneet Singh Bittu also criticised the chief minister on social media, posting in Punjabi, “Maharaja Satoj, you can make as many people guard your shoes, but now it’s the people who will target you with these."
Mann was in Sri Muktsar Sahib to lay the foundation stone for projects worth Rs 138.83 crore under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme. These initiatives aim to improve the city’s sewerage and water supply systems and lay new pipelines in newly developed areas.
During an address at Guru Gobind Singh Stadium, Mann indirectly responded to the controversy, saying, “Do these political opponents have any roadmap for Punjab? Our slippers and shoes have become an issue for them… Even the suits of our mothers and sisters are an issue for them. These are the kinds of matters they are left with now."
