Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann may seek a trust vote in a special Assembly session amid reports of AAP Rajya Sabha MPs joining BJP.

Punjab's AAP government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, is likely to bring a trust vote in the Assembly.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, is likely to bring a trust vote in the Assembly during a special session convened on Thursday, even as political tensions escalate in the state.
The session, officially dedicated to workers on International Workers’ Day, comes against the backdrop of reports that seven AAP Rajya Sabha MPs have joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. With six of them reportedly from Punjab, the development has fuelled speculation over the stability of the Mann government.
Ahead of the session, a cabinet meeting is expected to be held to chalk out the government’s strategy, with the trust vote seen as a potential move to demonstrate its majority on the floor of the House.
Meanwhile, the opposition Indian National Congress has announced plans to gherao the Assembly. The protest will be led by Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, who is expected to raise issues related to workers’ rights.
Labour unions are also gearing up for demonstrations, demanding higher wages and improved working conditions. The protests are scheduled to begin at 10 AM, adding to the already charged political atmosphere in the state.
The AAP came to power in Punjab with a sweeping mandate in the 2022 Assembly elections, marking a major political shift in a state traditionally dominated by the Congress and the Shiromani Akali Dal. Since then, the Mann government has positioned itself around governance reforms and welfare measures.
However, recent reports of defections from AAP’s Rajya Sabha ranks to the BJP have triggered fresh political uncertainty. While there has been no official confirmation from the party on the exact numbers, the speculation has intensified opposition attacks and raised questions about internal cohesion.
The special session on Labour Day, originally intended to highlight workers’ issues, has now taken on added political significance, with both the ruling party and the opposition preparing for a show of strength inside and outside the Assembly.
