In a dramatic turn of events in Punjab’s Ferozepur district, a 17-year-old girl who was believed to have been killed after being pushed into a canal by her father has resurfaced alive and is now urging authorities to release him from jail.

The teenager, a school dropout and the eldest of four sisters, appeared before the media on Sunday, recounting her escape and expressing concern for her younger siblings, who she says have no one else to care for them.

The case shocked the state when, on September 29, her father Surjit Singh allegedly tied her hands and pushed her into a canal over suspicions about her “character." The assault took place in full view of her mother and three younger sisters, and Singh even recorded the act on video footage that later went viral.

Following a complaint filed by the girl’s cousin, Ferozepur City Police registered a murder case and arrested Singh, who has been lodged in the central jail since.

Speaking to reporters, the teen described how she managed to stay alive. She said the ropes around her wrists loosened as she was carried downstream by the strong current. At one point, her head struck an iron bar protruding from the water, giving her a chance to cling on and pull herself toward the canal bank.

Three passers-by spotted her struggling and rescued her. She declined to disclose where she stayed during the two months she remained missing, but said she had been ill and undergoing treatment.

Despite the trauma she endured, the girl has appealed for her father’s release.

“My younger sisters have no one else to look after them," she said, breaking down. She also alleged that her mother had encouraged her father, who was reportedly intoxicated during the attack, to act violently.

The teen has requested police protection, saying she does not trust her relatives.

With her reappearance and detailed account, police are reassessing the case. According to officials, charges may be downgraded from murder to attempted murder as the investigation moves forward.

The extraordinary survival and shifting dynamics within the family have turned the case into one of Punjab’s most startling criminal twists in recent months.
