TMC leader Jahangir Khan, popularly known as the “Pushpa of Falta", was arrested in connection with extortion and other charges and later paraded in short pants by police in the Falta area. According to reports, Khan was apprehended near Panitanki on the India-Nepal border after allegedly trying to evade arrest.

Following his arrest, a Diamond Harbour court sent him to five days of police custody. Multiple FIRs had been lodged against him at the Falta police station. The development has triggered political debate in West Bengal, with the police action being viewed as part of a broader crackdown on alleged strongmen, syndicates and criminal networks.

The episode has also renewed focus on law-and-order politics, the TMC’s local leadership challenges and the government’s messaging on enforcement.

Jahangir Khan, who was wanted in several cases at Falta police station under Diamond Harbour, was arrested in a joint raid with the Darjeeling Police team.

Police said Jahangir Khan had been attempting to leave the country through West Bengal’s border areas when he was apprehended. The Trinamool leader had faced allegations of electoral malpractice during polling in Falta on April 29, held in the second phase of the Assembly elections.

The Election Commission subsequently cancelled the poll and ordered re-polling on May 21. Khan withdrew from the contest ahead of the fresh voting and has remained at large since the original polling day. The BJP eventually secured the Falta seat with a margin exceeding one lakh votes.

An influential figure in South 24 Parganas and considered close to Trinamool leader Abhishek Banerjee, Jahangir Khan had for years faced accusations from residents over alleged land grabbing, extortion and electoral violence following the change of regime in the state.

Soon after his arrest, enraged locals allegedly vandalised his office in Falta, smashing windows and furniture. A large quantity of relief material was also recovered from the premises.

Khan is the latest among several Trinamool leaders to be arrested since the BJP assumed power in West Bengal. Earlier, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested former MLA and influential leader Saokat Molla over his alleged involvement in a bomb blast in March 2026.

Earlier, sitting Bishnupur MLA Dilip Mondal was arrested by West Bengal Police from Puri on May 27 over allegations of threatening voters during the recently concluded Assembly elections. Since the change in government, hundreds of Trinamool Congress leaders, including former MLAs, have been arrested on charges ranging from corruption and extortion to other criminal offences.
