Russian President Vladimir Putin has reaffirmed his belief in the possibility of humans living up to 150 years, citing advances in medicine and biotechnology. Speaking during a press interview on Wednesday, Putin confirmed that the subject had come up recently in a conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

When asked directly whether he believed humans could live to 150 or longer, Putin responded positively. He revealed that he had discussed this very topic with Xi while walking together in Beijing.

“Modern means of health improvement, medical means, even surgical ones related to organ replacement, they allow humanity to hope that active life will continue differently than it does today," Putin said. He added that such medical developments give people hope that human life could extend well beyond current expectations.

The Russian leader also referred to historical demographic projections, saying, “There was some UN data that by 2050, there will be more people aged 65+ than 5-year-olds." He noted, however, “The social and economic consequences of that, that is something to be mindful of."

Putin’s remarks came just hours after a live broadcast captured a hot mic moment in Beijing. On Wednesday morning, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping were recorded casually discussing topics such as biotechnology, organ transplants, and human longevity as they walked together during a ceremonial event.

The two leaders were joined by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and a delegation of more than two dozen foreign officials attending a military parade to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.

As Putin and Xi approached the rostrum at Tiananmen Square, a live microphone picked up Putin’s interpreter saying in Chinese, “Biotechnology is continuously developing. Human organs can be continuously transplanted. The longer you live, the younger you become, and [you can] even achieve immortality."

Xi, though not visible on camera at the time, was heard replying, “Some predict that in this century humans may live to 150 years old."

The candid moment between the two world leaders quickly circulated online.
