Russian President Vladimir Putin declared that Moscow and Beijing are “united in strengthening" the BRICS bloc, positioning it as a platform to resist what he called “discriminatory sanctions" that obstruct the economic growth of member states.
In an interview with China’s Xinhua News Agency ahead of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin (August 31–September 1), Putin said Russia and China were working in tandem to expand BRICS’ influence and push reforms in global financial institutions.
“We are working closely with China within BRICS to expand its role as a key pillar of global architecture," he said.
“Together, we advance initiatives aimed at expanding economic opportunities for member states, including the creation of common platforms for partnership in strategic sectors."
He added that Moscow and Beijing share “similar views on regional and international security" and are aligned against sanctions that “hinder the socioeconomic development" of BRICS countries and the world at large.
Putin is in China for the SCO leaders’ meeting, where he is also expected to hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the summit.
During the interview, the Russian leader renewed his call for an overhaul of international financial institutions, including the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.
These, he argued, should be restructured to ensure equitable representation and access for all nations.
“Alongside our Chinese partners, we support the reform of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank… It is essential to end the use of finance as an instrument of neo-colonialism, which runs counter to the interests of the Global Majority," he said.
Putin also lauded China’s role in shifting the G20’s agenda to reflect the concerns of the Global South, noting the inclusion of the African Union as a step towards deeper cooperation between global platforms.
“Within the G20, together with like-minded nations, and especially BRICS members, we have redirected the agenda towards issues of real importance to the Global Majority," he said.
His comments underline Moscow and Beijing’s growing alignment as they seek to project BRICS as a counterweight to Western-led blocs and institutions.
