Dutch footballer Quincy Promes has been extradited to the Netherlands from Dubai on Friday over his role in smuggling over a ton of cocaine.

Promes, who was slapped with a six-year prison term in February 2024 for his involvement in shipping over 3000 pounds of cocaine from Brazil to the Netherlands in 2020, also has a separate year and a half sentence for stabbing his cousin.

Promes has made 50 appearances for the Dutch national side, netting 7 times in the process. However, his final outing for the Oranje since the Euro 2020.

Promes was born in the Dutch Capital city of Amsterdam and began his youth career with RKSV DCG before moving to the Ajax Academy, where he spent eight years, in the year 2002. He made the switch to Haarlem in 2008 before moving to Twente in 2009.

He made his senior debut for Twente a couple of years later in 2011 and went on to make 34 appearances for the side and scored eleven times. He went on a season-long loan to Go Ahead Eagles in 2012 and managed to find the back of the net 13 times for his team.

Spartak Moscow came calling in the year 2014 and the Dutch winger won over a century of caps for the Russian unit scoring 59 times. He moved to Spanish side Sevilla for a year before returning to Amsterdam with boyhood club Ajax, where he spent a couple of campaign. He signed for Spartak Moscow yet again in the year 2021 before joining Dubai United in the year 2024.

The footballer had touched upon his return to the Netherlands of his own record on the condition that his crimes would be forgiven, however the Dubai police reprimanded him last week at the request of their Dutch counterparts and the extradition was confirmed by prosecutors.
