The Railway Ministry has told its zones to prioritize staff training and fill faculty vacancies, after recent parliamentary committee reports pointed out gaps in regular induction, refresher, and promotional training for personnel. The ministry said that not having advanced training for railway employees and many vacancies in training institutes could put train safety at risk.

Following the committees’ recommendations, the ministry wrote to all railway zones, stressing the need to build a skilled, safety-focused workforce ready for future technology. The letter advised setting up a strong system to monitor training at all stages, making sure no staff miss mandatory training and that all training records are kept properly. It also called for filling all approved faculty positions in training institutes.

The ministry noted that the Public Accounts Committee on ‘Derailment in Indian Railways’ and the Standing Committee on Railways found gaps in regular training and that many staff at both field and supervisory levels have not completed required training, which could affect train safety. The committees also pointed out many vacancies in training institutes and that training funds are not being fully used.

The ministry said Indian Railways is in a critical phase of adopting new technologies and modernizing. It suggested setting up a system to track the allocation and monthly use of training funds to make sure they are used well. Since training is essential for service and safety, Zonal Railways and Production Units are asked to take action to carry out these recommendations effectively.
