Northern states experienced additional rainfall on Thursday, with landslides reported in Himachal Pradesh and Delhi facing the threat of a rising Yamuna River following heavy rainfall. Punjab continues to reel under heavy floods, while a key highway in Jammu and Kashmir was closed.
Normal life has been completely thrown out of gear, and businesses were gravely affected as heavy rains battered Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Himachal Pradesh. Educational institutions have been shut in almost all states due to inclement weather.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday issued an orange alert in parts of Delhi and the adjoining NCR region for up to 6 pm. The alert was later downgraded, with the possibility of moderate rain in the national capital.
Yamuna Level Remains Steady In Delhi
The water level in the Yamuna at Delhi’s Old Railway Bridge, which crossed the 207-metre mark on Wednesday, remained steady at 207.46 metres as the national capital received fresh rainfall on Thursday.
Officials told news agency PTI that the water level is expected to begin receding gradually, though floodwaters continue to inundate nearby areas and relief camps. Floodwaters even reached near Delhi Secretariat, which houses the offices of the chief minister, cabinet ministers and key bureaucrats.
Meanwhile, Delhi once again witnessed massive traffic snarls today due to waterlogged roads caused by incessant rainfall over the past two days. The escalating water levels of the Yamuna River have made the approach road to Yamuna Bank Metro Station inaccessible.
1 Dead, 6 Buried In Himachal Pradesh
Meanwhile, two houses collapsed in a landslide in Kullu district on Thursday, leaving one dead and six buried under the rubble, officials told PTI. The incident occurred in the Akhada Bazaar area around 6 am.
Three people were rescued and shifted to a hospital, while a search was underway for survivors. Notably, heavy rains over the past three days have triggered landslides at several places. At least 343 people have been killed in rain-related incidents since the start of the monsoon.
All government and private colleges, schools, anganwadis, and coaching centres have been closed in Himachal till September 7 due to the incessant rainfall. A total of 1,292 roads are closed in the state, including 294 in Mandi and 226 in Kullu.
J&K Highways Closed
Additionally, the Kashmir valley was cut off from the rest of the country as all roads, including the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, were closed for traffic on Thursday due to landslides triggered by the rain.
The Jammu-Rajouri national highway has also been closed due to a landslide and some patches of roads being washed away. Rail traffic has remained suspended in the Jammu railway division for the past nine days due to misalignment and breaches at multiple locations in the Pathankot-Jammu section.
All government and private schools across Jammu and Kashmir have been closed today due to heavy rainfall and weather alerts issued for the region. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for several areas of the union territory until September 7.
37 Dead As Punjab Reels Under Floods
The state of Punjab is witnessing its worst flood disasters in decades, due to swollen rivers – Satluj, Beas and Ravi – caused by heavy rainfall for the last few days. At least 37 people have been killed so far, and crops on over 1.75 lakh hectares of land have been destroyed.
Relief and rescue operations are underway on a war footing, as authorities are providing help to over 3.55 lakh people in 1,655 villages. An alert was issued after heavy rains in Rupnagar and Patiala districts, as the authorities urged residents to stay vigilant. All schools, colleges, and universities have been closed till September 7.
