In an effort to improve students’ awareness of current affairs and strengthen reading and language skills, the Rajasthan government has introduced a new initiative making daily newspaper reading compulsory in government schools.

Under the new guidelines issued by the School Education Department, newspapers will be read every day during the morning prayer session. The move aims to encourage students to stay informed about national and international events while also helping them build better vocabulary and expression.

As per the instructions, higher secondary schools must subscribe to at least two newspapers—one in English and one in Hindi. Government higher primary schools are required to order two Hindi newspapers. Meanwhile, English-medium government schools must ensure the availability of at least one English and one Hindi newspaper.

According to the guidelines issued by School Education Department Secretary Krishna Kunal, students will read editorials, major national and international news, and sports updates. To improve language skills, five new words along with their meanings will be introduced daily. Students from Classes 6 to 12 will be given responsibility for reading out key news items and editorials.

Students assigned the task will be required to arrive at school 30 minutes earlier to prepare the content. The guidelines also state that on ‘No Bag Day’, schools will organise group discussions focusing on government activities and related topics.

Education Department officials said the initiative “will increase students’ interest in news, expand their general knowledge, and positively improve their language and expression skills, as well as social awareness and also help them prepare for competitive exams."

Kunal added that the programme would also play a key role in developing a regular reading habit among students.

The government believes the step will help shape students into informed, thoughtful, and confident citizens by encouraging curiosity, discussion, and awareness from an early age.
