A horrifying case of mass suicide in Rajasthan’s Barmer district has sent shockwaves through the region, after four members of a family were found dead in a water tank near their home in Udu village under the Shiv police station area. The deceased have been identified as Shivlal Gaur (35), his wife Kavita (32), and their two young sons, Bajrang (9) and Ramdev (8). The police said that a property dispute with Shivlal’s younger brother might have driven the family to this extreme step.
What has deeply unsettled the community and sparked widespread attention is a disturbing reel that surfaced on social media shortly after the incident. In the video, allegedly recorded just before the suicide, Kavita is seen dressing her younger son Ramdev as a bride. The clip, now viral, shows the mother adorning the child in bridal attire, an eerie prelude to the tragedy that followed. The police believe the family made the video shortly before ending their lives.
Police recovered a suicide note near the water tank where the bodies were found. The handwritten note cites ongoing tensions within the family over ownership of a house, reportedly built under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). The letter also includes a final wish, that the last rites of the family be conducted in front of their home.
Shivlal, originally a steel furniture worker in Jaipur, had returned to his village recently. He was living on a farmhouse with his family, while his younger brother, Mangi Lal, lived in the same vicinity. Sources say a prolonged dispute over property rights, particularly the PMAY residence, had created a rift between the brothers. Their mother currently lives with Mangi Lal in Barmer city, while their father, an astrologer by profession, was reportedly in another village at the time of the incident.
Local police from the Bhiad outpost were first to reach the scene after being alerted by villagers. Senior officers including Shiv Station House Officer Satyaprakash Vishnoi, CO Ramsar Mana Ram Garg, and ASP Barmer Jasa Ram Boss arrived shortly thereafter. The police also summoned a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team, which inspected the site and collected evidence.
All four bodies were retrieved from the tank in the presence of officials and relatives and have been sent to Bhiad Hospital’s mortuary for post-mortem examination. The police said that the case is being treated with utmost seriousness, especially in light of the viral reel and the contents of the suicide note.
