The Durgapur gangrape case, involving the sexual assault of a medical student, has sent shockwaves across the nation. On Thursday, the Asansol Police submitted the chargesheet in the case within just 20 days of the incident — a rare instance of swift investigation and prosecution in such cases.
According to the chargesheet, rape charges have been levelled against the victim’s classmate, while gangrape sections have been invoked against three villagers. Two additional accused have been charged with criminal conspiracy and snatching.
Speaking to News18, a senior officer of the Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate said, “Our entire team worked meticulously on this case under the guidance of the Commissioner of Police and ADPC. The investigation was completed and the chargesheet submitted within 20 days. Our primary concern has always been the victim’s health and ensuring that justice is secured for her through a fair trial and conviction of the accused."
The chargesheet reveals that on the day of the incident, the classmate had allegedly planned to have sexual intercourse with the victim. Sources say he was even carrying a condom at the time. The girl, terrified when she was taken into the bushes, was assaulted by her classmate. During the act, three local villagers arrived at the scene. The classmate fled, leaving the victim behind. The villagers then allegedly harassed and assaulted her — with one of them raping her and the others molesting her. Later, two more men arrived and attempted to extort money and intimidate the victim.
Police sources confirmed that the victim is recovering, though she remains deeply traumatised by the ordeal. Officials expressed confidence that the trial will begin soon and that the accused will face strict punishment upon conviction.
The case has sparked a political storm in West Bengal, with leaders across parties trading accusations. The horrific assault — coming close on the heels of the RG Kar Medical College incident — has reignited national outrage over women’s safety and the need for faster justice delivery.
