Real Betis midfielder Isco fractured his leg in a preseason friendly against Malaga, his second such injury in a year, threatening his Europa League availability.

Real Betis have been dealt a major blow after midfield talisman Isco suffered a fractured leg for the second time in less than a year, the La Liga club confirmed on social media on Sunday.

The 33-year-old former Real Madrid and Spain playmaker sustained the injury during a preseason friendly against Malaga on Saturday. According to the club’s medical report, it is a “new non-displaced fracture to the middle third of his left fibula".

This latest setback comes just eight months after Isco sustained the same injury in May 2024—a blow that sidelined him for several months.

Comeback and Impact at Betis

Isco returned to competitive action in December 2024, making an immediate impact as he helped Betis secure sixth place in La Liga and qualification for the UEFA Europa League.

He also captained the side in the Europa Conference League final, where Betis fell 4–1 to Chelsea. Despite the loss, his leadership and technical quality were widely praised, and he ended the season as one of the league’s standout creative midfielders.

A decorated figure in Spanish football, Isco won the UEFA Champions League four times with Real Madrid during his nine-year stint at the Bernabéu, as well as multiple La Liga and FIFA Club World Cup titles.

His resurgence at Betis earned him a recall to the Spanish national team in 2025—his first call-up since 2019. He marked his return in the Nations League final against Portugal, coming on as a substitute and scoring in the penalty shootout, though Spain ultimately lost.

This latest fracture threatens to derail Isco’s preseason preparations and raises questions about his availability for the opening stages of Betis’s Europa League campaign. The club has not yet confirmed an expected recovery timeline.
