Real Madrid has secured the return of Álvaro Carreras, reaching an agreement with Benfica on Monday to bring the 22-year-old left-back back to the Spanish capital. Carreras, a product of Madrid’s youth academy, has signed a six-year deal with the club.
Financial terms of the transfer were not disclosed.
Carreras originally developed at Real Madrid’s academy between 2017 and 2020 before continuing his career abroad. After a standout stint with Manchester United’s youth setup—where he was named the club’s best under-23 player for the 2021–22 season—Carreras moved to Benfica. This past season, he helped the Portuguese club win the Portuguese League Cup.
He will be officially presented as a Real Madrid player on Tuesday.
A Tough Season for Madrid Despite Big-Name Signings
Carreras’ arrival comes at the end of a challenging campaign for Madrid. Despite the high-profile signing of French star Kylian Mbappé last summer, the club failed to meet expectations on several fronts.
They were eliminated by Paris Saint-Germain in the semifinals of the FIFA Club World Cup, finished second to arch-rivals Barcelona in La Liga, and were knocked out of the Champions League in the quarterfinals.
Madrid is now looking to rebuild and strengthen key positions ahead of the new season, with Carreras expected to bolster the squad’s depth on the left flank.
Adding Depth to the Midfield and Defense
While Carreras is the only confirmed signing at the time of writing, reports suggest Real Madrid is actively targeting reinforcements in midfield and central defense.
With Luka Modrić nearing retirement and Toni Kroos having already stepped away from club football after Euro 2024, Madrid is looking to ease the transition to a new era. Jude Bellingham and Eduardo Camavinga are already mainstays, but the club is reportedly eyeing a deep-lying midfielder to complement them.
In defense, interest in young, versatile center-backs continues. The club knows the aging of key defenders like Nacho and Alaba poses a long-term risk.
