Alonso faces tension at Madrid as his strict discipline clashes with players' freedoms, as the cultural shift from Ancelotti’s relaxed style comes off as too drastic.

It seems like the honeymoon period is over for Xabi Alonso at Real Madrid.
After a flying start to life as Los Blancos’ new boss, a sudden dip in form has left the Spanish giants wobbling, and the tension is starting to show both on and off the pitch.
During a weekend clash with Rayo Vallecano, players were seen arguing mid-match over tactical instructions — a public glimpse into the growing disconnect between Alonso’s methods and his squad’s execution.
Discipline Divide
According to journalist Romain Molina, much of the unrest stems from the drastic cultural shift between Carlo Ancelotti’s relaxed style and Alonso’s strict disciplinarian approach.
Under Ancelotti, several players reportedly enjoyed a looser schedule — taking post-match trips to Ibiza, skipping training sessions at will, and generally operating with greater freedom.
Alonso, however, has brought in a new regime of discipline and structure, and not everyone has welcomed the change.
Some players, including high-profile figures like Vinícius Jr and Rodrygo, are reportedly frustrated by what they see as Alonso “meddling" in their personal lives. Sources suggest their entourages have grown irritated by the manager’s insistence on professionalism even during off days.
While Alonso’s hardline stance is admirable and arguably necessary, it’s also clear that enforcing discipline in a dressing room full of megastars is no easy task. Managing egos at Real Madrid has undone many talented coaches before him. Just ask Carlo Ancelotti.
Ancelotti’s Words of Wisdom
Alonso’s former mentor Carlo Ancelotti, however, has stepped in with words of calm and support.
“A draw at Real Madrid is the prelude to a crisis," Ancelotti said. “Madrid’s results have been spectacular so far. What more can you ask for?"
The Italian, who faced his own share of criticism during his tenure, reminded everyone that turbulence is part of the job.
“Storms will always come, but what matters is how you handle them."
