On the eve of their Champions League clash with Liverpool, Real Madrid paused preparations to honour the memory of Diogo Jota and his brother André Jota in a moving tribute outside Anfield.
Representing Real Madrid were manager Xabi Alonso, defender Dean Huijsen, and club legend Emilio Butragueño, who were joined by Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jota’s former Liverpool teammate.

Together, they laid two bouquets of flowers at the stadium’s main entrance — one red, one white — symbolizing the unity and compassion that transcends football rivalry.
For Alexander-Arnold, now at Real Madrid, the tribute was deeply personal. His bouquet was accompanied by a heartfelt handwritten note that read:
“My mate Diogo. You are so missed but still so loved. Yours and André’s memory will always live on. I smile every time I think about you and will always remember the great times we shared. Miss you mate, every day. Love, Trent and family. Forever 20. YNWA."
Alongside the flowers, Trent placed a red PlayStation controller, a touching nod to Jota’s trademark “invisible joystick" celebration. On it, he had written:
“Forever a champion, I will miss you."
For Real Madrid, Alonso, a former Liverpool star himself, led the ceremony, laying a wreath of white flowers on behalf of the Spanish giants. His accompanying message read:
“Real Madrid expresses its condolences to Liverpool FC and the family of Diogo Jota. The football world mourns the loss of an exceptional player and an incredible person."
As the Champions League clash looms, both teams will take the field carrying the memory of a player who left behind far more than goals.
