Real Madrid seeks compensation from UEFA after a Madrid court ruled UEFA abused its position blocking the Super League.

The Super League might have been buried years ago, but Real Madrid clearly didn’t forget. Now, they want payback.
On Wednesday, the Spanish giants announced that they’re seeking compensation from UEFA after a Madrid court dismissed appeals from the European governing body, LaLiga, and the Spanish football federation (RFEF).
The ruling confirmed that UEFA had “abused its dominant position" when it tried to stop the controversial Super League project back in 2021.
What was the European Super League?
For those who’ve forgotten the chaos, the Super League was supposed to be football’s elite breakaway competition, launched by twelve of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Manchester United.
It crashed and burned within 48 hours after fans, players, and even governments revolted. Nine clubs quickly pulled out, leaving only Madrid, Barça, and Juventus clinging to the idea.
But Real never backed down.
When the European Court of Justice ruled in December 2023 that UEFA and FIFA’s opposition to the project broke EU competition law, Madrid president Florentino Pérez called it a “victory for football freedom."
Now, this latest court ruling takes things a step further: opening the door for the club to demand damages.
“This ruling paves the way for the club to claim substantial damages," Madrid said in a statement.
UEFA hasn’t commented yet, but the timing couldn’t be worse as they gear up for another Champions League cycle.
It’s been almost five years since the Super League imploded, yet its shadow still looms large.
