Day after two people were killed and nine injured in a deadly shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, a university sophomore said this was the second school shooting she has survived.
“I’m really angry. I’m really angry that this is happening to me all over again. And I’m just in shock," 20-year-old Zoe Weissman told MS NOW.
“I think mentally I feel like I’m 12 again. These feels exactly how I felt in 2018," she said of the shooting that killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
New York Post quoted her saying that there are currently no classes in session at Brown, but students were “out and about" taking finals before the winter holidays when a gunman opened fire Saturday evening, killing two and injuring nine.
“There’s already students who survived the school shooting in Oxford in Michigan, and then went to Michigan State and survived another school shooting," she said. “This isn’t a new phenomenon, and we’re going to get to a point where there’s people like myself who survived two of these."
Law enforcement agencies have released video of the suspected gunman. Providence police shared a video still showing a man walking along Hope Street shortly after the shooting. The suspect is believed to be male, possibly in his 30s, and was seen wearing all black or dark clothing. Authorities said this is the only confirmed visual evidence available so far.
Brown University remains under lockdown as the shooter has not yet been taken into custody. Students and staff were earlier sent an emergency alert by the university’s Department of Public Safety at 4:22 pm on Saturday.
The alert warned of an “active shooter" and advised people on campus to run, hide, and fight only as a last resort. Many students sheltered inside buildings as police secured the area.
Investigators said the shooting took place inside the Barus and Holley Engineering Building at 184 Hope Street. It is not yet known how the suspect entered the building. Police confirmed that he later exited onto Hope Street and fled the scene.
Emergency services rushed the injured to nearby hospitals. Two of the victims died from their injuries, while several others remain under medical care.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley confirmed that the FBI is assisting local police in the investigation. A dedicated website has been created to collect tips related to the shooting. Members of the public can submit information at fbi.gov/brownuniversityshooting.
The Providence Police Department has also opened a special tip line for the case. Anyone with information is asked to call 401-652-5767.
