European governing body, UEFA, hit fans of  Serbian club Red Star Belgrade with a ban on attending the domestic champions’ upcoming away fixture in the UEFA Europa League due to instances of racist and offensive behaviour.

Fans of the club chanted slurs about Roma people, Europe’s largest ethnic minority, and also targeted the home team Braga when Red Star was defeated 2-0 in Portugal last week.

UEFA’s disciplinary panel deemed charges of “racist and/or discriminatory behavior" and “illicit chants" inappropriate for a sports event.

Red Star was already on probation for a previous case of racist conduct by fans and now is prohibited from selling tickets for its next away game against Sturm Graz on Dec. 11. A new probationary period of two years has also commenced, UEFA stated. UEFA fined the 1991 European Cup winner €62,500.
