Wade Miley dragged into Tyler Skaggs overdose case as alleged drug source (MLB.Com)
Veteran MLB pitcher Wade Miley, currently with the Cincinnati Reds, finds himself under scrutiny after being named in court documents tied to the tragic 2019 death of Tyler Skaggs.
The Los Angeles Angels pitcher died from an accidental overdose of fentanyl, oxycodone, and alcohol. Now, years later, Miley is being accused of playing a role in the events that may have contributed to that loss.
Court documents reveal Wade Miley may have supplied drugs to Tyler Skaggs before fatal overdose
Tyler Skaggs’ former agent, Ryan Hamill, revealed in a deposition tied to the Skaggs family’s wrongful death lawsuit against the Angels that the late pitcher confessed to using pain pills laced with oxycodone—allegedly supplied by Miley.
According to Hamill, the conversation occurred in 2013 after concerns about Skaggs’ behavior led to an intervention by Hamill and Skaggs’ parents. During that confrontation, Skaggs admitted to his drug use and named Miley as one of his sources. While Wade Miley is not facing any criminal charges, this isn't the first time his name has surfaced in the investigation. During the sentencing phase of Eric Kay—former Angels public relations official who was convicted of distributing fentanyl-laced pills to Skaggs—prosecutors played a jailhouse call in which Kay allegedly said Miley was among the suppliers.
Kay is currently serving a 22-year federal prison sentence.
Former MLB pitcher Matt Harvey also became a central figure in this scandal. During Kay’s trial, Harvey admitted to supplying drugs to Skaggs and was later suspended for 60 games for violating the league's drug policy. His suspension effectively ended his major league career. Harvey, along with three other players, testified about the rampant drug culture they witnessed within the Angels' clubhouse.Though Skaggs and Miley only shared time as teammates with the Arizona Diamondbacks between 2012 and 2013, the timing aligns with the claims made in the deposition. The latest developments put Miley under a harsh spotlight at a delicate point in his career. Now 38, Miley recently returned to the mound after undergoing Tommy John surgery in May 2024. He signed a minor league deal with Cincinnati in February and exercised his opt-out clause after failing to make the roster by June 1. Despite that, he remained with the Reds and re-signed, making two starts so far this season. As the legal battle surrounding Skaggs’ death continues, the broader implications for MLB’s handling of drug issues—and those accused in its shadows—are once again being brought to light. Also Read: Aaron Civale’s trade request triggers sharp response from Brewers manager after bullpen role decision
