Police have launched an extensive search operation after a remand prisoner escaped from the Viyyur Central Jail premises in Kerala’s Thrissur on Monday night.
The fugitive, identified as Balamurugan, a native of Tamil Nadu, was facing trial in more than 50 criminal cases, including violent thefts and assaults. He reportedly escaped when Tamil Nadu police were bringing him back to the jail after completing legal formalities at the Virudhunagar court.
According to officials, the incident occurred moments after Balamurugan was taken inside the Viyyur Jail compound. The officers had removed his handcuffs to allow him to relieve himself, when he suddenly ran through a nearby vegetable garden towards the main road and disappeared.
Police said that Balamurugan is a repeat offender who had previously escaped from Tamil Nadu police custody. Based on his past behaviour, officers suspect he may attempt to steal a two-wheeler to flee the area.
Kerala Police, along with their Tamil Nadu counterparts, have intensified checking across Thrissur and neighbouring districts to trace him. The Tamil Nadu police team that escorted Balamurugan has been questioned, and their statements have been recorded.
According to their account, the officers had bought food for Balamurugan, during which he was not handcuffed. When their vehicle reached the Viyyur Jail compound, it stopped to let him relieve himself. Only one officer stepped out of the vehicle with him, and it was at this moment that Balamurugan made his escape.
