COIMBATORE: Residents of Velliyampalayam in Tirupur staged a road roko to protest dumping of garbage in an abandoned stone quarry in their area. The protest affected traffic on the busy Tirupur-Erode Road for three hours.Earlier, the municipal corporation had been dumping garbage in an abandoned stone quarry in Pongupalayam. But when the residents opposed it, the corporation was forced to dump the garbage in an abandoned stone quarry at Velliyampalayam near Uthukuli. But residents of Velliyampalayam too opposed it. They petitioned the district collector to stop the waste disposal in the stone quarry.On Tuesday morning, nearly 20 trucks dumped waste in the stone quarry at Velliyampalayam. Noticing this, around 180 residents staged a road roko protest which lasted three hours till police forcefully dispersed them.
