Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and football legend Lionel Messi will kick the football together when the latter visits the city as part of his India tour in December.
The event is likely to be scheduled on December 13, either at the Rajiv Gandhi stadium in Uppal or the Gachibowli stadium, and the government is keen on using this opportunity to promote Telangana at the global level.
A delegation of the ‘GOAT Tour to India 2025’, which is promoting the tour, met the Chief Minister at his residence on Monday and informed him of the same. The delegation consisted of Satyendru, who is said to be closely associated with Messi, and Parvathi Reddy, who is involved in promoting football in Telangana.
The State administration also revealed that Messi will be extended an official invitation to become the global ambassador of ‘Telangana Rising’, a long-term roadmap outlining the State’s vision for inclusive and sustainable growth by 2047.
Rohin Reddy, president of Khairatabad District Congress Committee, said since the Chief Minister himself is a fan of the game and a player himself, the government is keen on a special felicitation event and a football exhibition match during Messi’s visit to promote sports and youth engagement in Telangana.
The announcement has sparked widespread excitement among football enthusiasts in the city. Hyderabad, traditionally known for its love for cricket, has seen a surge in football’s popularity in recent years.
Fans have already taken to social media, expressing joy and anticipation over the prospect of seeing the Argentine maestro in action. For many young footballers and fans, Messi’s visit represents not just a sporting event but a once-in-a-lifetime inspiration.
“I am very excited to know Messi is coming to Hyderabad. He is among the greatest ever to grace the sport, and to be in his presence, in the same city as him is an honour. Having watched him every weekend growing up, I am excited to see one of my childhood heroes,” said Yanamandra Purna Ayush, a first-year B.Tech student.
“Messi is a global icon, possibly with a complete career trophy cabinet. I am sure all football lovers are looking forward to welcome him to the city. Hyderabad also has a great fanbase for Barcelona FC. Hopefully this will be a positive experience and inspire local, young footballers,” said Vishnu Teja Edara, who leads football at South Clan FC.
