The Delimitation Commission on Monday notified the revised ward delimitation of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation after the previous one released last week faced criticisms over errors in demarcating boundaries between wards. The names and boundary limits have changed for a handful of wards in the capital, while the ward numbers have changed for quite a few wards, possibly requiring a change in the official documents for the residents in these regions.

With the delimitation exercise, the number of wards in the Corporation area will increase from 100 to 101, with the scrapping of some old wards and the forming of new ones. One of the new wards to be formed is the Port ward (Ward 65), which includes the Vizhinjam International Seaport and nearby areas. Though the ward was originally named Kottapuram in the draft notification, it was renamed Port based on the suggestions that were submitted by the public to the commission.

Some of the newly formed wards are in the Kazhakuttam and surrounding regions. The ward delimitation was done scientifically considering the number of houses and population in each ward. The division of wards was done keeping an average of 4,100 houses, with 10% tolerance on either side, in each ward. Before the delimitation, the population distribution between the wards was hugely uneven. Rapid urbanisation and vertical development in the Kazhakuttam area had led to the number of houses in the wards here going up to as much as 8,000.

Cease to exist

The newly formed wards in the Kazhakuttam region are the Sainik School ward (Ward 2), Chenkottukonam (Ward 7), Karyavattom (Ward 9), Pangappara (Ward 10), Alathara (Ward 96) and Kuzhivila (Ward 97). The other newly formed wards are Ambalamukku (Ward 15), Gowreesapattom (Ward 36) and Karumam (Ward 61). The wards that will cease to exist are Mulloor, Kottappuram, Kuriyathi, Manikkavilakom, Beemapally East, Muttathara, Palkulangara, Shanghumughom and PTP Nagar. Sreevaraham and Perunthanni wards which were removed in the draft notification have been retained following public demand.

Average of 8,000-11,000

In wards like Beemapally east, the number of houses were found to be around 2,000, making it a fit case to be merged with the adjacent ward. After the delimitation, the population in each ward in Thiruvananthapuram will be at an average of 8,000-11,000 and the number of houses at around 4,000. One of the aims of the delimitation exercise is to keep the population numbers in each ward within a certain limit for effective service delivery.
