A new biography of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. recounts a series of unusual personal anecdotes, including a reported incident in which he cut off a penis from a dead raccoon to study it later.
The account appears in “RFK Jr.: The Fall and Rise," written by Isabel Vincent, a reporter for the New York Post. The book draws in part on Kennedy’s private journals from 1999 to 2001, when he was living in New York City.
According to the book, Kennedy described an incident during a family trip in which he stopped along Interstate 684 and removed a body part from a road-killed raccoon. In the journal entry cited by Vincent, Kennedy wrote that he intended to examine it later.
The journals were provided to Vincent after the death of Kennedy’s second wife, Mary Richardson Kennedy, who died in 2012 at her home in Westchester County, New York. A source cited in the book said she had kept the diaries during the couple’s divorce proceedings, which were not finalized at the time of her death.
The biography also details Kennedy’s strained relationships with some family members, including his brother Douglas Kennedy and cousin Bobby Shriver, as reflected in his writings.
Other anecdotes highlighted in the book point to a broader fascination with animal anatomy. In a 2012 interview with Town & Country magazine, Kennedy’s daughter, Kick Kennedy, recalled that he once decapitated a whale carcass during a family trip to Hyannis Port, Massachusetts.
Separately, in 2024, Kennedy acknowledged disposing of a dead bear cub in New York’s Central Park after attempting to skin it. He said he had come across the animal during a falconry outing in Goshen, New York.
Kennedy has not publicly responded in detail to the specific claims outlined in Vincent’s book. The biography adds to public scrutiny of the health secretary, whose career has spanned environmental law, politics and public health.
