Treadway was best known for racing in the 2002 Indianapolis 500, one of the biggest events in motorsports.

Rick Treadway made 11 INDYCAR starts during the 2001 and 2002 seasons. He made his series debut at Kentucky Speedway in 2001 and later raced in the 2002 Indianapolis 500 for Treadway Racing, a team owned by his father, Fred Treadway. During that famous race, Treadway started 17th and finished 29th after being involved in an accident with Tony Kanaan on Lap 90.

His best INDYCAR result came at Texas Motor Speedway in 2001, where he finished fifth. Before reaching INDYCAR, he competed in Formula 2000 racing, SCCA events, and several short-track open-wheel series. Away from the track, he also worked as a commercial pilot and served as a Federal Aviation Administration-certified flight instructor.As news of his death spread, many people from the racing community shared heartfelt messages.
