 A Legend Chapter 1’ beats Vicky Kaushal’s 'Chhaava' to become the biggest hit of 2025

In a remarkable achievement, Rishab Shetty’s 'Kantara 2' has outperformed 'Chhaava' to claim the title of 2025’s biggest blockbuster, raking in an impressive Rs 601.68 crore. Rishab Shetty’s ‘Kantara: A Legend Chapter 1’ has done the unthinkable, it has gone past the lifetime box office of Vicky Kaushal and Laxman Utekar’s Chhaava based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj to become the biggest hit of 2025.

Chhaava had a total theatrical collection of Rs 601.54 crore and on the 29th day of its release Kantara 2 broke the record with a collection of Rs 2.38 crore which took the total collection of the film to Rs 601.68 crore- thereby becoming the biggest hit of the year.

Kantara 2 on Thursday had become the 8th biggest hit of Indian Cinema by beating Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao’s Stree 2. Kantara 2 which is a sequel to 2022 blockbuster hit Kantara started its box office run with a bang.

In the opening week itself the film collected Rs 337.4 crore- going past Kantara’s lifetime collection in just one week. In the second week the film minted another Rs 147.85 crore which took it closer to Rs 500 crore mark. In the third week the film earned another Rs 78.85 crore which took it way past Rs 550 crore mark . In the fourth week the film collected Rs 37.58 crore which not only took it beyond the Rs 600 crore mark but took it beyond Chhaava’s collection and thereby becoming the highest grossing film of 2025.

The year 2024 also so a similar event, Stree 2 which released in August went onto mint Rs 597.99 crore at the box office and everyone thought this would be the biggest hit of the year. But with the release of

and

Sukumar

’s Pushpa 2- The Rule all box office records shattered as the film went on to mint Rs 1234 crore at the ticket window. While it is a moment of glory for Rishab Shetty and his team that the film has become the biggest hit of the year, the film from today itself will be available on OTT platforms in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. The Hindi version is said to be released only after the film completes 8 weeks in cinema halls. It would be interesting to see how the film fares from here on as the film would be available in theaters and on phones.

Kantara 2’s Kannada version has minted Rs 193.62 crore, Telugu version Rs 89.68 crore, Hindi Rs 211.5 crore , Tamil Rs 61.93 crore and Malayalam Rs 44.95 crore.
