BENGALURU: Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) has approached the Karnataka high court seeking to quash a criminal case filed against the team in connection with the stampede outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4 that left 11 people dead.The stampede occurred on the evening of June 4, as large crowds gathered to celebrate RCB’s maiden IPL win, resulting in 11 fatalities and several injuries.Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah had expressed deep grief over the incident. Speaking to reporters on Sunday, he clarified, “This incident shouldn't have happened; it happened at the cricket stadium. I don’t have any connection with the cricket stadium.”The CM said that five police officers have been suspended in connection with the incident. “The intelligence chief and my political secretary have also been replaced. The case is being taken seriously and appropriate action has been taken. The government is not at fault, but the incident has caused great sorrow,” Siddaramaiah added.On June 4, before the stampede, the RCB team was felicitated by the Karnataka government at the Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru.Following the tragedy, the Karnataka government suspended senior police officials at Cubbon Park Police Station and set up a one-man commission led by a retired high court judge to investigate the incident.(With agency inputs)
