Old Trafford finally rejoices after a prolonged period of pain.

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim admitted he could not bring himself to watch Bruno Fernandes’ stoppage-time penalty that sealed a 3-2 Premier League victory over Burnley on Saturday — but insisted he never doubted his captain would deliver.

Fernandes, who had missed from the spot just a week earlier in United’s defeat at Fulham, stepped up again in the 95th minute at Old Trafford with the score locked at 2-2.

Amorim, however, looked away as the Portuguese midfielder ran up, instead turning to face the Stretford End.

Unlike at Craven Cottage, Fernandes made no mistake this time, calmly slotting home to earn United their first win of the new campaign.

The result brought huge relief to Amorim, who had faced increasing scrutiny after a sluggish start to the season and an embarrassing League Cup exit on penalties to fourth-tier Grimsby in midweek — a shootout he also declined to watch.

During Saturday’s clash, Amorim had cut the figure of a manager under pressure, especially when goalkeeper Altay Bayindir’s error gifted Burnley a second-half equaliser to make it 2-2. The mistake sparked a furious reaction from the Portuguese coach on the touchline.

At the final whistle, however, the mood shifted. Amorim celebrated wildly with his players, acknowledging both the importance of the result and the frustrations that came with United’s inability to kill the game earlier.

A Win, But Questions Remain

Despite the victory, United’s performance again raised questions about their defensive fragility and lack of composure in front of goal.

The 39-year-old coach has admitted in recent weeks that his emotions can run high, even confessing earlier that he sometimes “hates" his players in the immediate aftermath of defeats.

On Saturday, though, Amorim struck a much more conciliatory tone.

“It ended well, I think we deserved to win the game," he said. “When they put the effort, I will always love them."
