Russia on Tuesday attacked Ukraine’s Chernihiv killing four people and left the city in total blackout and many without water, the energy ministry said.
The ministry said that Chernihiv and northern part of the province had lost all electricity supply following attacks on its power supplies by Russia.
According to BBC, in a raid involving more than 100 Shahed drones – each of which carry a 50kg warhead – and six ballistic missiles, the direct strikes on Chernihiv’s electricity generating facilities left the whole city without power, as well as large parts of the surrounding area.
Later, parts of Chernohiv reported that power supply was restored.
Andriy Podorvan, the deputy head of the Chernihiv Regional Military Administration, said: “For around half a year we have been experiencing targeted strikes on the energy infrastructure in our region. The number of attacks has significantly increased over the last two months."
In another attack by about 20 Russian kamikaze drones killed four civilians and wounded at least seven more in the town of Novhorod-Siverskyi, Reuters quoted local officials as saying. Among those killed included a 10-year-old girl.
Meanwhile, residents were forced to stock up on water as the attack on electricity grid caused loss of power to water pump stations.
Later, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy shared a post on Telegram saying “Russia’s tactics are to murder people and terrorise them with the cold."
“(Russian President Vladimir) Putin pretends to be ready for diplomacy and peace negotiations, while in reality this night Russia launched a brutal missile and drone attack," Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha wrote on X.
As per Reuters, Chernihiv region, which borders Russia and had a pre-war population of just under a million, has been hammered by drone and missile attacks on its power infrastructure in recent weeks, causing regular blackouts and disrupting daily life.
