Bringing international recognition to India, S.R.N. Mehta CBSE School of Kalaburagi has secured the first prize in the 8th grade category of the prestigious NASA Ames Research Center–National Space Society (NSS) Space Settlement Design Contest 2025.

The school’s award-winning project, titled IRA, was conceptualised and developed by a team of 11 students, demonstrating outstanding innovation and futuristic thinking in designing a sustainable space colony. The contest saw participation from over 4,900 students representing 25 countries.

“The team was invited to present their project at the International Space Development Conference (ISDC-2025) held in Orlando, Florida, USA, from June 19 to 22. On June 21, the students presented their work through both poster and oral presentations before an audience of over 250 international space scientists, astronauts, and dignitaries, who praised their creativity, scientific depth, and confidence,” the school principal said in a media note.

As part of their enriching experience, the students also visited NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, where they explored advanced space exhibits, observed rocket launch pads, and interacted with astronauts. The experience left a lasting impression, inspiring them to pursue careers in space research and STEM fields.

The student team comprised Aarna Adarsh, Deepika, Khushi, Poorvaja, Pranati, Saanika, Shambhavi, Sharan, Shreya, Zaisha Falak, and Nihar, who participated under the guidance of principal Rajashekhar Reddy. The students returned to India on June 30, carrying both global recognition and newfound inspiration to dream bigger.

The management of S.R.N. Mehta School & Colleges congratulated the students, faculty, and parents, describing the achievement as a proud moment not just for the school but for the region and the country.

“This victory is a testament to our commitment to nurturing curiosity, scientific thinking, and global excellence among our students,” the principal said in a statement.
