SA20 auction: Franchises break the bank with Rs 59 crore spent on South African players

NEW DELHI: A massive R116.9 million (approx. Rs59 crore) was splashed on South African players at the SA20 Season 4 Player Auction, with R22.8 million (approx. Rs11.4 crore) spent on 12 Under-23 cricketers.

The spotlight, however, belonged to Dewald Brevis and Aiden Markram, who shattered all previous auction records to become the costliest buys in the league’s history.Both top-order batters, heavily discussed even before the auction, triggered intense bidding wars in Johannesburg under the gavel of Richard Madley, setting the cricket world buzzing.

The most dramatic contest came when Pretoria Capitals, with new coach Sourav Ganguly calling the shots, outbid Joburg Super Kings to secure Brevis for a record R16.5 million (approx.

Rs8.3 crore) — the highest-ever price paid in SA20 auctions.Pretoria Capitals Head Coach Sourav Ganguly shared his reactions on signing Brevis: “I hope he does well. I think he is a tremendous talent. His game has really progressed over the last one and a half year, as we saw against Australia.
