A police inspector from Saharanpur’s Deoband area has sparked a row after a video of him talking about terrorism and religion went viral. In the viral clip, Inspector Narendra Kumar Sharma is telling people that terrorism has no religion, a remark that later led to criticism and disciplinary action.

The video surfaced soon after the Delhi blast, at a time when rumours were spreading in the region. To prevent tension, Inspector Sharma had called a meeting at the Deoband police station on Tuesday.

He urged community members to maintain harmony and not to believe in misleading claims circulating online.

During the meeting, Sharma said, “Terrorism and terrorists do not have any religion… it is wrong to think that only Muslims are terrorists. They can be found in every religion."

Someone recorded his comments and shared them on social media, where a short, selective portion quickly went viral.

What The Viral Video Shows?

In the video, Inspector Sharma can be heard saying, “This chair is like my mother. A wrong person has no religion. Naxalites come from the Hindu community, many terrorists have been caught in the Navy, many terrorists were caught in the Army, and many Hindu terrorists were also arrested in Punjab. it is wrong to believe that only Muslims are terrorists."

He further added that no scripture encourages harming others and said he has worked for 34 years without discrimination.

“In my 34 years of service, if even one Muslim says that I have shown bias based on religion… if such a person exists, I will resign and walk away from my job."

Sharma spoke emotionally about his career, saying he joined the police not for money, but because he wanted to improve the system he saw as a student. He recalled seeing exploitation of the poor and middlemen operating inside the station, which motivated him to serve.

“Our caste is police… the police is our religion, the police is our faith… we will sacrifice ourselves for the country," he said.

Action Taken By Police Headquarters

As the clip circulated widely, it eventually reached officials in Lucknow. On Thursday, Saharanpur SSP Ashish Tiwari directed that Inspector Sharma be line-attached.

Sharma, however, maintains that his remarks were misinterpreted. He says only a short, selective part of the video was shared, and insists the full recording would make it clear that he never intended to offend any religious community.

Local Reactions And Support

Sharma has served in the Deoband police station for nearly 20 years and is known locally for his direct communication style and fair working approach. Many residents have spoken in his favour.

Former Bajrang Dal Deoband provincial convenor Vikas Tyagi praised his conduct and demanded action against those who edited and shared the video in a misleading way.
