OpenAI CEO Sam Altman advised users to be cautious in placing too much trust in ChatGPT- the AI chatbot his company built. Speaking on the inaugural episode of OpenAI’s official podcast, Sam Altman acknowledged the growing reliance users have on AI tools like ChatGPT, but urged a more skeptical approach. He said, “People have a very high degree of trust in ChatGPT, which is interesting, because AI hallucinates."

Reflecting on how users often overestimate the accuracy and reliability of generative AI systems, Sam Altman said, “It should be the tech that you don’t trust that much."

Sam Altman On AI’s Capabilities

During the podcast, Sam Altman also addressed the evolving capabilities of ChatGPT, including persistent memory and a possible ad-supported model. Sam Altman acknowledged that such trade-offs must be met with openness and accountability, saying, “We need to be honest about that. It’s not super reliable."

The remarks come as OpenAI navigates multiple legal challenges, including a lawsuit from The New York Times and other media organizations over alleged copyright violations stemming from AI-generated content.

OpenAI To Pause Operations 

This comes as OpenAI is set to temporarily shut down operations for a week to offer a much-needed break for its overworked staff. The decision, reportedly aimed at giving employees time to recharge, comes amid concerns about burnout, with some team members clocking over 80 hours a week. Chief Research Officer Mark Chen emphasized that talent retention remains OpenAI’s top priority, especially as tech rivals like Meta attempt to poach staff. In a message to employees, Mark Chen acknowledged ongoing efforts by both himself and CEO Sam Altman to retain key talent.

“Meta knows we’re taking this week to recharge and will take advantage of it to try and pressure you to make decisions fast and in isolation," he cautioned.
