New Delhi: Samsung has officially released its first Galaxy XR headset in the UK, with the move being another significant step towards the extended reality (XR) market. The headset, which is a virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR) all in one, can be bought at £1,699 (roughly Rs 2,17,641). Alongside the offer, Samsung is also offering a bunch of some of the best apps and services for over £665 (roughly Rs 85,186) for a limited period, making the offer more alluring.
The Galaxy XR headset runs on Android XR, the brand-new operating system specifically created for XR devices. The headset, which Samsung has partnered with Google and Qualcomm, promises to deliver an even more sophisticated mixed reality environment that merges virtual and real-world images.
The Galaxy XR headset’s standout feature is its dual 4K micro-OLED screens, ensuring precise imaging and vivid colors. The headset also offers spatial computing functionality, bringing digital objects into the “real world,” including real environments. This includes gestures like hand tracking, pass-through image, and Google’s Circle to Search, which provide greater interaction with both virtual and real-world content.
While the headset was designed for gameplay, Samsung claims it is something more than that and is made for productivity, entertainment, and creativity. They are able to view movies on a virtual large screen, multiple floating windows, attend virtual meetings, and explore and use virtual apps. In addition to adding against real-world manufacturing processes, supported design and content generation software can be used within a virtual workspace by creative professionals.
In order to sell the headset to early buyers, Samsung will release a Samsung Explorer Pack with the headset. Services like Google AI Pro, Calm Premium, Adobe’s Project Pulsar, and other high-end applications and subscriptions are included with the bundle. Customers also get a discount when purchasing the headset with eligible Galaxy smartphones and can save on accessories such as controllers and travel cases.
The Galaxy XR headset is priced at the high end of the market, but is not as costly as Apple’s Vision Pro, offering a more budget-friendly choice for high-end mixed reality devices. The advanced features and pricing, however, make it a device primarily aimed at professionals and tech enthusiasts and not casual users. Samsung is pushing its way to chart-topping in the emerging XR sector with the UK release. The Galaxy XR headset may find its place among the augmented reality and mixed reality headsets category as more and more developers start to develop apps for Android XR and the technology advances.
