The Kalaburagi unit of the Samyukta Horata Karnataka, a consortium of farmers, women’s, labourer organisations, has urged several farmers and labourers’ associations to join a protest in large numbers in Kalaburagi city on July 9. This is part of a nationwide strike against the ‘anti-farmer’ and ‘anti-worker’ policies of the governments.
District president of Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha Sharanabasappa Mamshetty, All-India Kisan Sabha district president Bheemashankar Madiyal, All-India Agriculture Workers’ Union district president Bheemshetty Yempalli, and Centre Of Indian Trade Union president M.B. Sajjan, jointly addressing a press conference in Kalaburagi on Wednesday, accused the Union and the State governments of being two faces of the same coin. They should stop passing the buck and make efforts for the welfare of farmers and labourers keeping their political motives aside, they said.
Mr. Mamshetty demanded that the government implement recommendations of the M.S. Swaminathan report that guarantee the procurement of crops at minimum support price (MSP) based on the “C2 + 50 percent” formula,
The demands also included revocation of amendments and laws on land reforms.
The government should immediately stop land acquisition at Devanahalli in Bengaluru Rural district and return the acquired land of 1,770 acres to the farmers in 13 villages at Devanahalli. Siddaramaiah, who promised to safeguard the farmers’ land in Devanahalli, had failed on his promise and instead attempted to target the land of poor farmers, Mr. Mamshetty alleged.
The Samyukta Horata Karnataka also urged the government to prepare a comprehensive plan of action to prevent farmer suicides; and also revise the minimum wages to ₹26,000 per month for all unskilled workers, besides providing pension coverage and health benfits.
They also demanded that the State government fill up vacant posts of teachers in government schools and colleges in Kalaburagi district.
