Star Indian men’s doubles shuttlers Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty stunned top seeds Kim Won Ho and Seo Seung Jae in the semifinals of the Singapore Open, ending the Korean duo’s 34-match winning streak.
Rankireddy and Shetty had come into the contest as underdogs, having lost to the Korean pair twice in two encounters before.
Satwik-Chirag prevailed over the reigning world champion duo of Kim and Seo 21-19, 21-18 in a semifinal contest that lasted 52 minutes.
The Indian duo will face the winner of the other semifinal between the third-seeded Indonesian pair, Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri and the fifth-seeded Chinese combination of Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang in Sunday’s final.
In the opening game, Satwik and Chirag found themselves trailing 13-17 before producing a brilliant comeback to edge a closely contested game. The latter was dominant in the closing stages and the final rally featured some outstanding exchanges from all four shuttlers.
It was far from smooth sailing for the Indian duo of Satwik and Chirag in the second game as well, with the pair trailing 11-14 at the midway stage. But they held their nerve, fought back and overturned the deficit to stun the Korean combination.
Notably, Kim and Seo were coming off title triumphs at the Malaysia Open, All England and Badminton Asia Championships and having won the quarterfinals of the Singapore Open, they were on a 34-match winning streak.
This was also Kim and Seo’s first loss since the second round of the 2025 Denmark Open.
Satwik and Chirag had also qualified for the finals of the Thailand Open earlier this month, but lost to Indonesia’s Muh Putra Erwiansyah and Bagas Maulana.
But it was the end of the road for the Indian mixed doubles pair of Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto, who went down 16-21, 21-17, 13-21 to the Japanese duo of Yuichi Shimogami and Sayaka Hobara in the semifinals.
