Borussia Dortmund faces scandal as police in Hagen investigate sexual abuse accusations against a former employee, with multiple alleged victims coming forward.

Two accusations of sexual abuse have been made against a former employee of Borussia Dortmund, as police in Hagen, a town south of Dortmund, were quoted as saying by news agency AFP on Monday, embroiling the historic club in scandal.

A police spokesman mentioned that complaints against the individual had surfaced in recent days, without revealing the man’s identity.

Earlier this month, Dortmund had called for anyone with information on sexual abuse at the Bundesliga club to come forward after the Bild newspaper reported internal concerns about an unnamed former manager who allegedly abused a youth team player.

According to Bild, citing a lawyer’s letter and a five-page dossier given to the club in 2010, the alleged victim accused the manager of linking professional success to sexual favours, inappropriate touching, and attempting to kiss him.

In response to the allegations, Dortmund stated it had received complaints about the alleged abuser in 2010 and again in 2023 before removing him from a minor position and ensuring his departure from the club.

The 2023 complaint, also reported by Bild, involved alleged incidents that did not concern other club affiliates. Dortmund noted that the man denied the accusations.

Later, Bild reported speaking to eight accusers, including former fans, youth players, and neighbours of the man, with the youngest reportedly being 11 at the time of the alleged abuse.

The incidents are said to have occurred decades ago.

Borussia Dortmund informed AFP that they had commissioned external investigators to examine the allegations and would provide them with “all available means".

“We further encourage all victims of interpersonal and sexual violence, as well as anyone who can provide information about such incidents, to use the whistleblowing systems," they added.
