District Medical Officer (DMO) T.K. Jayanthy has issued a warning against diagnostic laboratories and scanning centres engaged in offering prenatal sex determination in Malappuram.
Dr. Jayanthy said that prenatal sex determination was a punishable offence, and that stringent measures would be adopted against institutions violating the restrictions.
Dr. Jayanthy said that special training would be given to scanning centre operators in prenatal sex determination.
As many as eight scanning centres were permitted in the district on Tuesday. Newly registered scanning centres will be given special training, she said.
The DMO said that posters and boards would be raised at different places with the objective of creating awareness against prenatal sex determination.
A meeting held here on Tuesday reviewed various aspects of scanning centre management. The DMO warned scanning centres that only qualified doctors were authorised to run such centres.
She asked the people not to open scanning centres without proper registration, for which the district medical authorities should be approached.
District Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) Officer N.N. Pameeli, social workers Beena Sunny and Sujata Varma, and District Education Media Officer K.P. Sadikali were among those who attended the meeting.
