Second Godavari flood warning issued in Andhra

The submergence area of the Polavaram irrigation project and the Godavari delta in Andhra Pradesh are bearing the brunt of the flood as the Godavari flood level reached the second flood warning in Bhadrachalam in Telangana State.

At 10:05 p.m., the second Godavari flood warning was issued after the water level reached 48 feet at Bhadrachalam, a threat of flood in the Polavaram project submergence area— the Chintoor agency along the borders of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Chhattisgarh. 

Dozens of tribal villages have been cut-off, forcing the officials to launch the relief operations. The tribals began to trek towards the hilly areas in search of temporary shelter. The Chintoor Integrated Tribal Development Authorities began shifting the pregnant women to the nearby government hospitals. 

Warning for Delta

Downstream Polavaram irrigation project lies 42 km from Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage, where the first flood warning has been issued at 6:39 a.m, on Thursday (August 21, 2025). “

“The flood level was 11.75 feet over the sill at Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage at Dowleswaram, was recorded at 6.39 a.m. on Thursday. It is further expected to rise. The inflow crossed 9.7 lakh cusecs”, as per the warning issued by the Godavari River Conservator, Dowleswaram.

At the downstream of the barrage falls the entire Godavari delta, in which islands have been cut-off from the mainland. All the designated Flood Officers are on the task, preventing any breaches and keeping an eye on the embankments. 

In an official release, East Godavari District Collector P. Prasanthi has directed all the officials to intensify relief operations and evacuate the affected families. The police personnel and State Disaster Response Force personnel are on the ground to assist the relief and rescue operations across the Godavari delta.
