Shivamogga

A person working as a guard for Visvesvaraya Iron and Steel Plant (VISP) at a mining lease area at Badanehal Bandigudda in Bhadravati taluk of Shivamogga district in Karnataka died in an elephant attack on June 19 night.

Kumar, 53, was on duty when a wild elephant trampled him to death. He is survived by his wife Shanthamma and a daughter. He was posted at the mining lease area within the forest enclosure in Channagiri Range.

Ashish Reddy, DCF of Bhadravati, told The Hindu that the mortal remains had been shifted to McGann Hospital in Shivamogga for post-mortem. “It was an unfortunate incident. He encountered an elephant roaming in the area. The place is surrounded by a forest,” he said.

The department would give a compensation of ₹20 lakh to the family of the victim, said the officer.
