Former Kerala High Court judge Babu Mathew P. Joseph inaugurated a seminar on ‘Challenges to the foundational principles of the Constitution’ jointly organised by the Indian Association of Lawyers and the Achutha Menon Foundation as part of the Communist Party of India (CPI)’s Thiruvananthapuram district conference on Wednesday.

Mr. Joseph raised concern over attempts being made by the Centre to undermine State-run institutions and political parties by pushing the idea of ‘One Nation, One Election.’

He also alleged ongoing efforts being made to to use the Governors as tools to undermine the rights of the States, thereby violating the federal principles enshrined in the Constitution. Any action taken in defiance of the Cabinet’s advice amounts to unconstitutional governance. The Governor is bound to act on the advice of the elected government, he asserted.

CPI State secretary Binoy Viswam presided over the seminar.
