Seven people were killed when a landslide-hit vehicle fell into a deep gorge from the Bana-Seppa Road in Arunachal Pradesh’s East Kameng district.
The incident happened late Friday night. Officials said the victims, including four children, were from two families.
Rescue teams recovered all the bodies throughout the night.
East Kameng falls in the Arunachal West parliamentary constituency. Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, who represents the seat, mourned the death of the passengers of the vehicle.
“Deeply saddened by the tragic landslide in Arunachal Pradesh that claimed seven innocent lives. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. May the departed souls rest in peace. Prayers for strength and healing to all affected by this heartbreaking loss,” he posted on X.
Arunachal Pradesh Home Minister Mama Natung, who hails from the district, also mourned the death and advised people to be cautious while travelling when it rains.
“My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families during this difficult time. I request everyone to remain vigilant and avoid travelling at night during the monsoon season,” he said.
District officials said another vehicle was also caught in the landslide, but its passengers had a providential escape. The passengers managed to make their way out of the vehicle, which hung precariously from the edge of the road.
Landslides in other parts of the State reportedly killed at least two other people. The affected districts were Anjaw and Lower Subansiri.
