Thousands of devotees gathered at the famous Thirupparamkunram Murugan Temple in Madurai on Friday ahead of the Vaikasi Visakam festival, leading to severe overcrowding that caused several pilgrims to faint and collapse inside the temple premises.
According to local reports, the heavy rush of devotees resulted in long queues and congestion in multiple sections of the temple. Several worshippers reportedly suffered dizziness and exhaustion amid the crowd, prompting temple authorities and emergency personnel to rush them for medical assistance.
Vaikasi Visakam, one of the most important festivals dedicated to Lord Murugan, is celebrated across Tamil Nadu and marks the deity’s birth star, Visakam, in the Tamil month of Vaikasi. The occasion attracts lakhs of devotees to Murugan temples every year.
The situation was particularly intense at Thirupparamkunram, one of the six sacred abodes of Lord Murugan, where devotees began arriving in large numbers from the early hours of the day.
Authorities deployed additional police personnel and crowd-management teams to regulate the movement of pilgrims and prevent further incidents. Medical teams were also stationed at the temple complex to provide immediate assistance to devotees experiencing health issues.
Apart from Madurai, heavy crowds were reported at several major Murugan temples across the state, including Palani, Tiruchendur, Swamimalai, Pazhamudircholai and Thiruthani, as devotees gathered to participate in special prayers and rituals associated with the festival.
