Several places in Chennai record more than 100 mm rainfall; light rain forecast for August 31

Many places in and around Chennai City recorded intense heavy rainfall starting Saturday (August 30, 2025) evening and running into early Sunday morning. According to data provided by the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai, Ennore Port recorded 150 mm, the highest in the 24 hours starting 8.30 a.m. on Saturday.

Other places that registered rainfall include Nungambakkam 81.9 mm, Meenambakkam 25.7 mm, Jaya Engineering College in Tiruvallur 48.5 mm, ACS Medical College in Kancheepuram 97.5 mm, Villivakkam in Tiruvallur 81 mm, Chembarambakkam 76.5 mm, and Poonamallee 70.5 mm.

Data provided by the Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority showed Ayanavaram New Taluk office recorded 96 mm, Guindy 27.20 mm, Mambalam Govt MGR HDD MGR Nagar 48.80 mm, DGP office 36.60 mm, Perambur Taluk office 81.20 mm, Tondiarpet CD Hospital 102.40 mm, and Ambattur Taluk office 105 mm.

Weather Blogger Pradeep John, called the intense rain as the first cloud burst for Chennai this year. “Many places have got over 100 mm in less than an hour.” The rain, which began in the north and north west moved slowly to the south.

Light rainfall has been forecast by the Met Office till 10 a.m. on Sunday over a few places in the city.
