Cyclonic storm ‘Montha’, brewing over the Bay of Bengal, is heading towards the Andhra Pradesh coast with wind speeds reaching up to 105 kmph.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted that the storm will intensify into a ‘severe cyclone’ and make landfall on the eastern coast of Andhra Pradesh around Tuesday evening (October 28).
“The cyclone is forecast to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam around Kakinada during the evening/night of 28th October as a severe cyclonic storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90-100 kmph, gusting to 110 kmph," the latest IMD forecast read.
Satellite imagery shows the high-intensity storm moving northwest towards the eastern coast. As of 11.30 am on Monday, it was centred approximately 530 km south-southeast of Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh), 560 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), and 720 km south of Gopalpur (Odisha).
The weather department has issued an ‘orange’ warning for the coasts of Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and adjoining South Odisha, and placed seven other states — Telangana, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Sikkim, and Bihar — on high alert for heavy rainfall at isolated places from October 28 to 30.
The storm is expected to bring heavy rains to Andhra Pradesh and Yanam of Puducherry, with extremely heavy rainfall (>200 mm) at isolated places from October 27 to 29. Districts along the cyclone’s path are likely to experience heavy rain, with intensity increasing from October 28 to 30.
Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and the South Odisha coast are preparing for significant impact. The weather department predicts a storm surge of nearly 1 m above the astronomical tide, which could cause massive inundation in low-lying areas of coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam around the landfall time on Tuesday night.
Forecasters warn of major damage to thatched houses/huts, roads, embankments, power and communication lines, and standing crops in the region, along with flooding of low-lying areas. Urban underpasses are likely to face closures due to the severe storm.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the southwest and adjoining central Bay of Bengal, along and off the Tamil Nadu-Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts till October 29, along and off the Odisha coast till October 29, and along and off the West Bengal coast during October 28 and 29.
“Those out at sea should return to the coast immediately," the MeT warned.
The IMD warns that regions including Tirupati, Annamayya, Nellore, YSR Kadapa, Prakasham, Bapatla, Chittor, Nadyal, Palnadu, Guntur, Krishna, East and West Godavari, Konaseema, Kakinada, Anakapalli, Alluri Seetharamaraju, Visakhapatnam, Eluru, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, Parvathi Puram Manyam in Andhra Pradesh, and Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Koraput, Nawarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nuapada, Boudh along the south Odisha coast may bear the maximum brunt and should prepare accordingly.
