Shah Bano’s daughter sends legal notice to Emraan Hashmi, Yami Gautam’s ‘HAQ’; film to release November 7

MUMBAI: The upcoming courtroom drama 'HAQ', starring Emraan Hashmi and Yami Gautam, faces legal challenges as Siddiqua Begum, daughter of Shah Bano, has served a legal notice to the filmmakers weeks before its scheduled November 7 release, alleging unauthorized depiction of her mother's life story without consent from legal heirs. The legal notice has been sent to director Suparn Verma, producers Junglee Pictures and Baweja Studios, and the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), according to news agency ANI."For immediate restraint on the publication, screening, promotion, or release of the upcoming film," states the notice sent by Siddiqua Begum.

The film is based on the landmark 1985 Supreme Court case Mohd. Ahmed Khan vs Shah Bano Begum, which significantly impacted women's rights and maintenance laws in India. The case originated in 1978 when Shah Bano, aged 62, filed a petition in Indore court seeking maintenance from her divorced husband, Mohammed Ahmed Khan, a prominent lawyer.Shah Bano and Mohammed Ahmed Khan had married in 1932 and had five children - three sons and two daughters. The Supreme Court ruled in 1985 that Shah Bano was entitled to maintenance under Section 125. However, the Rajiv Gandhi government introduced legislation the following year to nullify the court's verdict.

The film features a talented ensemble cast including Vartika Singh, Danish Husain, Sheeba Chadha, and Aseem Hattangady in significant roles. The project is being produced under the banner of Junglee Pictures, with Vineet Jain, Vishal Gurnani, Juhi Parekh Mehta, and Harman Baweja as producers.Directed by Suparn S. Verma, 'HAQ' is scheduled for theatrical release on November 7.
